Croeso! I’m Liz – a fifth-generation Welsh-American, now living in Australia.

Growing up in Central New York, an area settled by Welsh immigrants, I absorbed Welsh-American culture – the music, the foods and the language – from a young age.

But it wasn’t until I became an immigrant myself, moving to Australia in 2018, that I started to uncover the true value of my Welsh-American heritage.

In my first memoir, I show how language, culture and family history can guide and ground immigrants like me when settling into a new country.

The story traces my journey to learn the Welsh language and connect with my heritage on three continents: in the American northeast, across Wales, and in metropolitan Melbourne.

Interspersed with stories of my ancestors who immigrated years before me, the book examines how the past impacts the present and what happens when traditions and culture are left behind – or, resurrected decades later.
